The Crusader Gospel Corner
A former homeless man turned minister and now author, debuts a passionate work to help those still lost. The book is entitled “The Jesus Command,” a journey through the scriptures on a path of life changing inspiration. The local Chicago Minister with a flair for inspiration and encouragement has authored a guide to discipleship with positive life changing implications. Matthew Milam II, a Chicago native, is a serving Deacon, Biblical Counselor/Teacher, and the founder of Hands Of God Ministries. His new book takes a fresh look at the command of Jesus, “to love one another as I have loved you,” as the underlying basis for discipleship. Published by WestBow Press, “The Jesus Command” uses biblical principles, scripture, and candid discussion to provide the tools necessary to transform ordinary lives into extraordinary living.
Milam, spent nearly 20 years living as a depressed homeless man on the street, lost without hope. That existence might have very well continued had it not been for an encounter with a true disciple and follower of Christ. What resulted was a string of events that fueled the struggle back to a positive worldview and a meaningful way of living.
Taking the words of Jesus Himself… “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another,” (Jn. 13:35) – Milam uses the life of Christ and the inspiration of those closest to Him, to unravel the meaning of discipleship. Beginning at the threshold of love, a serious look at what it is to love – as Jesus loved, is explored. The love expressed by Jesus… the love of God, is much more than man is capable of mustering without some help.
Milam, in his role as minister, teaches Bible Study, and serves on the pastoral staff of South Side Gospel Church, in Chicago’s Woodlawn Community. The outreach he founded, The Hands Of God Ministries, helps those in need. Having lived life from both sides of the fence, he is no stranger to the need as well as the benefits of loving your neighbor.

Tell us a brief summary of your book’s plot.
Being that “The Jesus Command” is non-fiction, there is no plot… at least not one that follows a storyline. The book is an effort to provide suggestions that possibly answer a simple but complex question. How do we love like Jesus did? It was an action that was commanded of those who would be “His Disciples.” Mankind has defined love in a vast variety of ways… all of which fall short of the perfect Godly love dispensed by Christ. Hopefully, the book will help jumpstart the conversation within the Christian Community, as well as with each individual who is serious about his or her walk of faith. By using Christ’s own words, Scripture, Biblical Principles, and the actions of His closest followers; I make the attempt to look at Discipleship as Jesus intended it to be understood.
What was the inspiration for this story?
Long before this project was thought of as a book, it was the topic of discussion in our weekly Bible Study Group. Very early on, as I became the instructor, it was clear to me that a better understanding of Biblical Discipleship was necessary in order to move forward. With a diverse group of people comes many conflicting and diverse concepts. Many of which are entire misconceptions, deviating from what Scripture and the Bible teaches. We decided to explore the subject from a Biblical standpoint, with our focus on finding what Jesus wanted understood. With that in mind we then turned to to those who knew Him personally. The men who sacrificed their lives to further His teachings and spread what they thought was important to Him. After all, this was the start of the Church, and the closer we return to the original model, the closer we’ll be to the original intentions. That study continued for two years and I’m sure we only just scratched the surfaced.
About six months into the study it was suggested to me that my notes and handouts were beginning to look like the pages of a book. That was the first time that I really considered it. The more I thought and prayed about it… the more obvious it became that I would go on with the project. The thing that stood out to all of us is in the fact that we’re not the only ones who could benefit from a serious look.

This is one of those rare books that has the true potential to change lives, the world, and the course of history when the Godly principles taught within are adhered to. The Jesus Command is a MUST READ for Christian Educators throughout the world! As an ordained Teacher and College Professor, I have found this book to be a useful, spirit-filled instrument to assist teachers, preachers and leaders in building Disciples. Essential Keys are given to unlock the doors which prevent ordinary people from fulfilling the Lord’s purposes in their lives. You can even use this book as a conversation starter to win hearts over to a new life in Christ Jesus. This is an excellent resource to include in your arsenal.
Yes truly I am blessed!
It’s a good book…
ETA Worldwide Ministries, Inc,
The Jesus Command is well-written and laid out for the reader, providing guidance, inspiration and much to ponder as we gather more insight into His words.
For people who have never read the bible, Milam’s bible companion is an excellent start, giving readers an understanding of what Jesus was saying to his disciples and what they left mankind to try and grasp in our our own lives.

This is a book that is best read one chapter at a time as you focus on the content and review the material.
It reads as good resource material for a bible study/discussion. The author includes quite a few expressions of love that I hadn’t thought of specifically or heard mentioned as ways to fulfill the Command.

Thank you for writing “The Jesus Command.”
I’ve been reading it since Bruce has been in the hospital.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was inspired, strengthened and encouraged by it. I met a lot of people who were hospitalized at that time, many of them with serious and potentially life-threatening problems. This book reminded me that everyone I met was someone that God loves, and that His desire was for me to be a vessel of His love to them.
As I read “The Jesus Command,” I was also reminded that God loves everyone, including me. That reminder gave me strength to rise above the challenges that my loved one and I faced at that time. I was inspired to share that love with others, so that they would be nurtured and strengthened as well.
This book would be a great resource for an individual reader, or as a group study. The material is presented in a simple, yet effective manner. The format of the book makes it an easy read, but also powerful. I didn’t have a large block of time that I could devote to reading, but each page left me with something valuable.
I have recommended this book to others, and will continue to do so.
Blessings to you!

For those struggling to love another, this book will set you in the right direction.
Providing for you a comprehensive guide. In it you will find a collection of scriptures that will illuminate your path as a believer. Not only believers, but those who have heard the Word of God and are seeking to draw closer to Him should have a read.
I enjoyed the fact that it was concise and after the scriptures the author ensured that readers understood its context. This was achieved through the power of explanation and the use of examples. It opened my eyes to see the flaws I still battle with as a follower of Christ. The judgmental eye, the mouth quick to offer condemnation and the heart puffed up with pride.
In my opinion, it is impossible to read this book from cover to cover and not question yourself.
Am I being the light I was called to be?
Am I truly using the Word as my guide?
Am I loving without favor?
It is important to remain truthful to yourself, using the Word of God as the basis of your truth.
